Where the Past Comes to Life
What Makes Film Unique
People often ask what makes this documentary unique. Our film:
- Uses 40 pieces of music to immerse the viewer in Poe's life and works
- Is shot in 12 locations along the East Coast
- Explores several important literary themes in Poe's work, not discussed in other documentaries
- Explores Poe's little known role as a literary critic and in shaping the modern short story
- Emphasizes Poe's role in pioneering both the science fiction and detective story genres
- Spotlights Poe's prose poem about the Universe and its influence on cosmologists
- Delves into detail on Edgar's wife Virginia, who has played only a minor role in previous documentaries
- Discusses the importance of Maria Clemm and her relationship with Edgar
- Discusses Edgar's older brother Henry and his influence on Edgar turning to writing short stories
- Addresses Poe's enduring influence on later writers, artists, and scientists
- Dispels persistent myths about Poe's life and death

Surprisingly, Edgar's wife Virginia has played only a minor role in previous documentaries, and we wanted to highlight her significance. Our aim: to immerse the viewer in Poe's life and works, allowing his tales and poetry to come alive. We showcase illustrations, paintings, and film clips to powerfully evoke the mood of Poe's oeuvre. Through filming in five cities, interviewing five leading experts, using nearly 40 evocative musical pieces, and casting talented voice actors, our film brings Poe's story to life, dispelling many persistent myths about him.
