Director’s Statement

We believe that 19th-century writer Edgar Allan Poe is a pivotal yet under-recognized literary treasure. While there have been myriad films about Poe, this is the most comprehensive one to date. This highly engaging documentary delves into key figures and events in Poe's life never before encountered on film. Few realize his enduring impact on later authors and literary genres, and we do not feel his story has been so revealingly told—until now. This film uniquely captures his heart and spirit, letting viewers “meet the man behind the myth.”

Surprisingly, Edgar's wife Virginia has played only a minor role in previous documentaries, and we wanted to highlight her significance. Our aim: to immerse the viewer in Poe's life and works, allowing his tales and poetry to come alive. We showcase illustrations, paintings, and film clips to powerfully evoke the mood of Poe's oeuvre. Through filming in five cities, interviewing five leading experts, using nearly 40 evocative musical pieces, and casting talented voice actors, our film brings Poe's story to life, dispelling many persistent myths about him.

We convey Poe's little-known importance as a literary critic and his enduring influence on the short story genre. We spotlight Poe’s prose poem about the Universe, which likely inspired cosmologists who devised the Big Bang Theory. Finally, we shed new light on the mysterious circumstances surrounding Poe's death at age 40—and honor his lasting legacy.
